The first running of the BikeStow 3-day in the West Midlands region saw a convincing win for Ben Chilton of Spectra-Wiggle, ably supported by his team mate Daniel Barnes. The pair were the pick of an 80 rider field in the race sponsored by the locally based, cyclist-run makers of bike storage systems. The field included teams from Teeside and Manchester as well as a strong West Midlands entry.

Chilton and Barnes built their joint success on a strong ride in the opening stage on Friday evening around Cosford airfield. With a strong cross wind testing the 80 rider field each time they hit the runway – about every 4min – a 10-rider lead group went clear, and after just over an hour’s racing, Chilton, Barnes, solo rider Daniel Humpage and local plumber Kirk Vickers of Holohan Coaching RT proved the strongest with Vickers outwitting the Spectra pair to take the first yellow jersey provided by supplier ProVision.

The Saturday morning action switched to the Shropshire village of Aston on Clun, home to the celebrated Arbour tree, where Vickers again triumphed in a short, but tough time trial over 2.2 kilometres to a nearby hilltop. Vickers put 5sec into Teesside rider Toby Tanfield – who had missed the previous day’s start due to a car breakdown and was only permitted to ride for stage placings – with Chilton and Barnes maintaining their challenge at 9sec and 10sec respectively.

In the Saturday afternoon stage over 50 miles on the 8 mile rolling Aston on Clun circuit, the weather again came into play, with strong winds and heavy showers buffeting the field. The stage was dominated by a 10-rider break including local riders Ben Pierce (Bridgnorth) and junior hour record holder Fred Meredith of Holohan Coaching. Late on, Chilton bridged to the group together with another local rider, Charlie Genner, who is riding this season for Retelec in Galicia. In spite of a strong leadout from Tanfield, Genner was unable to match the finish speed of late entrant Liam James-Morris of Wales Racing Academy, with Chilton finishing third to move into the yellow jersey.

On Sunday morning’s final road race stage around the selective Astley circuit near Stourport, a near gale blowing from the west had the field huddling for shelter with Chilton and Barnes setting out to defend the lead. With Barnes acting as his wingman, Chilton was able to finish safely in a 26-rider main group behind stage winner William Abbott, a late attacker with Pierce, while Tanfield and Genner repeated their double act of the previous day, with Tanfield pulling Genner clear over the final climb. The Bromyard rider went on alone in the final kilometres, closing to just 12sec behind Abbott on the stage, and chopping 15sec off his overnight deficit on Chilton to move from seventh to second overall.
