Iestyn Jones (PB Performance) was a narrow winner of a tensely fought Halesowen Academy road race on the Welland circuit on Sunday. Jones outsprinted Luke Brennan (360) in the uphill sprint outside the church at Hollybush, with the outcome decided by a few inches, and the rest of a six rider break – Huw Owen (Beicio Eryri), Sean Dawson (Bridgnorth), James Bacon (Taap Kalas) and Kaleb Herbert (Halesowen) coming in behind. 

Jones had made his move late on, bridging on the run across Castlemorton Common to a small lead group that included Brennan – home for the season after racing in France last year – and Herbert. In cold and windy conditions, the break had been established two laps earlier, but its minute lead had been drastically reduced after a big effort from Patrick Fotheringham (Schils) that set up Jones’s move. 

Less than a minute behind the break, the bunch gallop was taken by Arthur Yates (Assos) from Luke Mannings (Halesowen). Jones joins a distinguished winners list that includes Tom Williams and Joe Brookes. 

The PB rider  takes an early lead in the West Midlands road race league, with the next round coming on April 18 at the Radnorshire RR in mid-Wales. The series is open to all comers this year, with an additional prize list for the West Midlands racers.
